Dylann Roof, the suspect in a mass shooting that killed nine people at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina on Wednesday night, faced a bond hearing on Friday. In addition to words spoken by the judge and attorneys, family members of the victims addressed Roof directly.

The pastor of the the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal church, a popular State Senator, was among the victims.
Clementa Pinckney, 41, is a well-known leader in the community and civil rights advocate.
The police have yet to formally confirm the identity of the other victims, but Charleston Police Chief Greg Mullen said six women and three men were killed. Charleston Mayor Joe Riley said, “The only reason someone would walk into a church and shoot people that were praying is out of hate.” He described the scene as “the most heartbreaking … I have ever witnessed in my life.”
