In Part 3 of the message series “Enter Here”, Senior Pastor Joel Eason takes us through this week’s message entitled, “The Plumb Line.” During this message, Pastor Joel shares that in scripture, God leverages the visual of a plumb line.

Here are a couple points to keep in mind:

• The Bible is the Plumb Line of learning who God is
• The Bible is the Plumb Line of learning how He interacts with His people
• The Bible is the Plumb Line of the nature of a life following Jesus

The Lord identifies himself as a builder and the Lord examines what is being built. In summary, God uses his word to graciously measure us.

Join us next week as we continue in the series “Enter Here”.

Leslie Hardinge was born in Calcutta, India, and was educated in England and America. He received his undergraduate degree from La Sierra University, Riverside, California, and then went on to earn three advanced degrees at the Adventist Theological Seminary in Washington D.C. and finally his Ph.D. degree from the University of London in 1964. During a hiatus from teaching from 1973 to 1977 he came to southern California to pastor the Glendale City church and then his focus returned to education when he became president of Adventist University of the Philippines (formerly Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary, Far East). At AUP he planned and built a library for the seminary and dedicated his personal library of almost 1,000 books to it. Probably best known for producing audio tapes for the weekly Sabbath School lesson, a favorite of Sabbath School class teachers in many countries for some 28 years, Hardinge’s teachings were distributed by The Spoken Word. An authority on the Israelite Sanctuary, he often said that if people could understand what happened in the sanctuary, they would understand the relationship between God and man. (

“Do Not Lie” – First & Ten Message Series – Bridgeway Church

This week, as we near the end of our message series “First and Ten”, focusing on the Ten Commandments, Pastor Micah Billingsley delivers a message on the 9th Commandment which is “Do Not Lie”.

The 9th Commandment states: “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.” ~ Exodus 20:16 (NKJV)

We lie everyday. We lie in our jobs, on social media, on the witness stand, to our friends and family. We lie to avoid negative consequences, or to get what we want, or to be accepted. There are many different types of lying for various situations that we find ourselves in daily.

Lies can creep into our lives and therefore we are tarnishing God’s glory for us and our neighbors. Examine how we can transition our lies into truths and become a proper example of Christianity and exhibit God’s salvation to others in today’s society.

The Rebuilt Message Series: Church of the Nativity Story | Rebuilt Parish

This video recording of Fr. Michael White’s 2013 homily just before the launch of the book Rebuilt, reveals the story of how Church of the Nativity realized they needed to change the way they were doing things. It is the story of stopping everything, asking the WHY question, and then starting over.

Fr. Michael recounts the story of “Family Friendly Fridays.” It was at that event that Fr. White came to a realization of the deep impact of consumerism on the parishioners at Nativity.

Michael and his associate, Tom Corcoran, worked very hard providing more and more programs. The faster they ran, however, the more the demand rose. They found that the people in their parish were demanding consumers. They created consumers who became super-consumers.

What is the “WHY” of their parish? What is the mission of the Church? The why of their parish is to make disciples of Jesus Christ. Christ gave us all a why; he said “Go, make disciples” (Mt. 28:19). The focus of everything they do, every ministry, is forming disciples.

The gravitational pull is always towards consumerism. Churches have become comortable consumer exchanges for the convinced. For this reason, they become irrelevant. As a Catholic Church, we have become irrelevant. When we make church all about us, and our comfort, then we make mass irrelevant. If parish life becomes about us, then we will never form new disciples.

Go, make Church matter to Catholics.

Monica Burns is the chapter founder and co-organizer of Black Nonbelievers of Louisville; she is also a member of Louisville Atheists and Freethinkers. Growing up a cultural Christian in Albany, Georgia, Monica never attended church. She moved to Louisville in 1997 and married her husband, Nathan, in 1998. In fitting in with her new family, she attended their family church twice a week or more for a decade before questioning it all and concluding that it was unbelievable. Monica works as a trade show manager for the auto industry and has 3 sons; Aaron, Jordan and Zion. She enjoys reading, watching debates, documentaries and lecture series. Somehow, she still has friends.

Bible Passage (KJV): Rev 1:9b – For the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.

=====================
Today’s Session

– The breakup of the Singapore BP Movement
– Where are they today? 
– Lessons learnt

“… divisions and separations are most objectionable in religion… but before we blame people for them, we must be careful that we lay the blame where it is deserved. False doctrine and heresy are even worse than division between churches. If people separate themselves from teaching which is positively false and unscriptural, they ought to be praised rather than reproved. In such cases separation is a virtue and not a sin… The person who is really guilty of schism is the one who caused the schism in the first place.” 1

TROUBLE IN THE SINGAPORE BP MOVEMENT

New Evangelical
New or Neo-Evangelicalism is a movement which began in 1948 with Harold Ockenga, who described it as “a repudiation of separatism and the summons to social involvement… a new emphasis upon the application of the gospel to the sociological, political, and economic areas of life. Neo-evangelicals emphasized … the recapture of denomination leadership, and the re-examination of theological problems such as the antiquity of man, the universality of the flood, God’s Method of Creation, and others.”2 Ockenga’s dislike of Fundamentalism is evident when he says that “fundamentalists are doing irreparable harm to our movement by identifying Christianity with ‘Thou shall not.’ They have lost all the joy out of Christianity and Christian living. They have made it negative.”3

The New Evangelical called upon God’s people to stay in the modernistic mainline denominations rather than leave them, to study at the feet of modernists in their theological institutions rather than reject them as heretics.4 It is a mindset of compromise. Their motto is “love” at any cost and the most important doctrine in the Bible is the saving of souls. All other doctrines are either not taught or minimised. The mindset of joining hands with all denominations regardless of doctrinal differences and maintaining peace at all costs is paramount in the neo-evangelical mind. Because it is a mindset it has infiltrated into the very heart of the most fundamental church, without exception.5

Dissolution of the Singapore BP Church Synod
As the B-P Movement grew, and younger men went overseas and imbibed liberal and New Evangelical theology, a deviant spirit began to creep into the BP Church. While wearing the BP name these were playing the New Evangelical game. “At every Synod meeting there was a tussle … it was a tussle between Fundamentalism and New Evangelicalism.”6

With growth of numbers, the B-P leadership went into the process of “decentralization” and “diversification.” (While we were one – just Life Church – everyone followed one Pastor). Now arose an increasing chorus of voices from new and younger leaders. In those years (1950 – 1980) the B-P Church was said to be the fastest growing Church in Singapore. Increasing numbers meant also increasing differences in beliefs and practice, and departure from the original.7

Finally, the “decision was arrived at after much prayerful consideration and discussion over certain protracted issues. These issues centred mainly on strong differences in interpreting the Doctrine of Biblical Separation, Fundamentalism, and Neo-Evangelicalism. Concerted attempts were made during the past two years…. Dissolution is accepted as the last resort.” 8
