High demerits are only part of the concern at dirty diners this week.
Health inspection reports show serious health code violations.
Stuff like roaches in a kitchen, mold in an ice machine and food found on the floor are some of the violations in question.
This week’s dirtiest restaurant is Sevilla Café on 241 South Texas Boulevard in Weslaco.
It scored 29 demerits on a health report.
Kitchen cops exposed off temperature beef, missing hairnets, insect contamination along with a cross contamination of foods, according to results on a report.
Colima restaurant on 1402 North Closner in Edinburg also scored low performer status with 21 demerits.
An inspector found food on the floor, missing towels for proper sanitation and dirty equipment.

Food 4 Thought- Roaches creepy crawling their way around Valley restaurants

Views:3688|Rating:4.58|View Time:3:8Minutes|Likes:11|Dislikes:1
They live in filth, spread diseases and are infiltrating a restaurant near you.

Roaches are seen creepy crawling at various low performing eateries across the Rio Grande Valley.

The Pearl on South Padre Island is one of the kitchens with insect contamination.

Kitchen cops report finding one on the wall during a health inspection.

The Director of Marketing, Marisa Castillo, did not want to appear on camera, but admitted swift action is necessary.

“It is an issue that we have to address immediately,” said Castillo. “And we will do so and take it very seriously.”

Roaches also pop up at Janitzio on 1042 East Adams in Brownsville.

Kitchen cops order the restaurant to re-fumigate to get the problem under control.

De Alba Tortilleria & Bakery on 2633 Pecan Boulevard in McAllen turns up a dead roach in the prep area, according to a health report.

But, this week’s dirtiest kitchen goes to Tacos El Pio, a taco stand outside Pharr on Jackson Road near Dicker Street.

It received 27 demerits.

The eatery is no stranger to dirty dining on Food 4 Thought

Back in January it was shutdown for multiple violations.

The recent report for Tacos El Pio shows no sink designated for hand-washing, meat not refrigerated, no soap or towels for proper sanitation, excessive flies and no health permit on site as required.

They’re the kind of violations you don’t have to worry about at Laguna Bob’s on 2401 Laguna Boulevard on South Padre Island, according to the manager there.

“What we’ve always been known for,” said restaurant manager Tom Rich. “Good service… Good food… And now clean.”

Laguna Bob’s, which serves a variety of small seafood dishes, clawed its way to zero demerits.

The Food Patrol awards Rich a Top Performer sticker.

“You put forth the same standards,” said Rich. “You do something… You do it well… That’s what we do.”

Poncho’s popped with demerits in McAllen for roaches, unsanitary practices

Roaches turn up in a Brownsville Chinese food restaurant as well as a San Benito McDonald’s, but it’s a worker who’s busted mopping and turning tortillas at Poncho’s in McAllen that’s most alarming on a health inspection report.
This type of multi-tasking is considered a hygiene health hazard, according to the inspector.
Poncho’s is located on 601 Expressway 83 in McAllen.
A kitchen cop found 21 demerits during a check-up spawned by a complaint.
Food items were found on the floor and a live roach on the wall, according to the report.
The restaurant’s marketing director, Jorge Escobedo, found some of the violations hard to believe.
“When we hear that an employee was mopping and flipping tortillas, as stated on the report by the health inspector, that concerns us,” Action 4’s Ryan Wolf said.
“I think that information is not true,” Escobedo said. “I don’t think it’s real.”
He told the Food Patrol that he would check with staff to ensure proper practices are taking place.
Escobedo says Poncho’s continues to expand in Hidalgo County because they are doing things right.

Roaches in Brownsville restaurant, Pharr eatery caught with moldy tortillas

Views:5115|Rating:4.38|View Time:3:29Minutes|Likes:7|Dislikes:1
When a kitchen cooks up demerit-less dishes, it scores the Food Patrol’s ultimate honor for clean.

Villa Del Mar in Palmview is this week’s featured top performer.

Reporter: When you walk in the restaurant and see that on the door (Food 4 Thought sticker)…What do you think?

“That I can come here every single time… Clean forks… Clean trays… Clean cups… Everything clean,” said waitress Maria Pacheco.

Carlos Cobos and his family love to eat at the seafood eatery on 910 Veterans Blvd.

“Makes me feel great,” said the Food 4 Thought fan. “Quality of food… I enjoy coming here just about every Sunday.”

The staff is excited to be recognized.

It’s not just the jumbo shrimp they want customers to sink their teeth into.

Workers want them to get a taste of their kitchen cleanliness, even before walking through the restaurant’s door, by seeing their top performer sticker.

“I love that you guys are going out there and staying on top of things,” said Cabos. “You’re making Valley residents feel comfortable about restaurants in our Valley!”

It’s a different story in Pharr.

That’s where a public health complaint at Taco Fiesta on 1101 North Cage Blvd in Pharr, leads to the discovery of moldy corn tortillas.

About 40 of them are voluntarily destroyed because mold is detected, according to a health inspector.

He says moldy food is a health risk.

The inspector added how the business thought the mold was actually burn marks on the corn tortillas.

The Food Patrol is told burn marks are typically brown in color, mold is black.

The tortillas in question are not made on the restaurant’s premises, according to the report.

Demerits aren’t typically issued on check-ups as a result of a public health complaint in the City of Pharr.

Once the tortillas were removed, no further action was taken.

Taco Fiesta did not comment on the inspector’s findings when the Food Patrol tried to inquire about the health violation.

Palm Lounge Bar and Grill on 757 E. Elizabeth St. in Brownsville is back on the low performer list with a score of 28 demerits.

A refrigerator is off temperature at 64 degrees when it should be 41 degrees, according to a health report.

There’s also no water pressure for proper sanitation, no soap or towels and a note about the need to fumigate because of roaches.

The creepy crawlers were caught on tape, along with other filthy conditions.

It’s the second time this restaurant has cooked up insect contamination in less than a year.

You know what we say to that!

“Keep it clean!”
