Sierra Buttes Fire Lookout Via PCT 7/7/2017 – Pacific Crest Trail, Sierra City, CA

Views:1095|Rating:5.00|View Time:5:41Minutes|Likes:2|Dislikes:0
Hiking up Sierra Buttes Fire Lookout is an epic journey with amazing views from the top as you climb the steep stairs to reach the lookout. The Fire Lookout stands on top of one of the craggy buttes at 8,587 feet. Sweeping vistas in all directions are no doubt WOW! Sardine Lakes, peaks of Tahoe/Desolation Wilderness and as far as Mt. Lassen (100 miles away!) are seen along with nearby mountains like Haskell Peak.

The hike is 2.5 miles/1,800′ gain one way via PCT while there are other longer routes to the lookout via Tamarack Lakes and Sierra City. As of July 7, 2017, there are some snow fields on trail, but they are short, not difficult to cross and probably will melt away in a week or two. Stay on track as the trail disappears here and there under the snow. Wildflowers are blooming and beautiful, but may not last that long as the summer’s heat continues.

The lookout was built in 1915, one of many in the greater Tahoe region. The stairs to the lookout was constructed by five Tahoe National Forest employees in the summer of 1964 to make it possible for visitors to climb to the lookout with ease and safety.

For a side trip, you can drive to Sardine Lake Resort at Lower Sardine Lake for a breathtaking view of Sierra Buttes rising above the lake. Also, another option would be to drive a short distance to Frazier Falls near Gold Lake. A paved trail (1/2 mile one way) takes you to the beautiful waterfalls.

Northern California Conference Gathers for Constituency Session

On Sunday, September 30, Lodi Fairmont church was the location for the 2018 Northern California Constituency Session. Some 600 delegates from across Northern California from the churches in Northern California came together to elect officers, listen to reports, act on recommendations, and put the work of God on a firm footing for the next four years.

The delegates at the Northern California session elected Marc Woodson, current NCC executive secretary, to be president. They also elected Jose Marin, current Arizona Conference executive secretary and ministerial/evangelism director, to be executive secretary, and they reelected John Rasmussen, NCC treasurer. They also voted all the NCC department directors and the three NCC ethnic coordinators return to office. You can read about the meeting and other actions taken on the NCC session by clicking the link below.

New from Oak & Acorn Publishing—Bill Johnsson’s New Book, “Authentic Adventism”

For nearly 25 years, Elder Bill Johnsson was a visiting minister to Adventist homes through the pages of the Adventist Review. Now retired in Loma Linda, California, Bill has continued to be a pastoral voice through his writing, including his book “Where are We Headed? Adventism after San Antonio,” that was published last year, and “Authentic Adventism” which has just been released.

With his characteristic grace and care, Dr. Johnsson candidly and personally addresses the issues that concern so many Adventists today, and once again focuses our attention on Jesus Christ, our hope and Savior.

Dr. Johnsson’s books are available from Oak & Acorn Publishing, a joint ministry of the Ministerial Association and Communication & Community Engagement Department of the Pacific Union.

SUMMARY
=======
The Pacific Northwest (PNW), sometimes referred to as Cascadia, is a geographic region in western North America bounded by the Pacific Ocean to the west and (loosely) by the Cascade Mountain Range on the east. Though no official boundary exists, the most common conception includes the Canadian province of British Columbia and the U.S. states of Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. Broader conceptions reach north into Southeast Alaska and Yukon, south into northern California, and east of the Continental Divide to include Western Montana and parts of Wyoming. Narrower conceptions may be limited to the northwestern US, or to the coastal areas west of the Cascade and Coast mountains. The variety of definitions can be attributed to partially overlapping commonalities of the region’s history, culture, geography, society, and other factors.
The Northwest Coast is the coastal region of the Pacific Northwest, and the Northwest Plateau (also commonly known as “the Interior” in British Columbia and the Inland Empire in the United States) is the inland region. The term “Pacific Northwest” should not be confused with the Northwest Territory (also known as the Great Northwest, a historical term in the United States) or the Northwest Territories of Canada.
The region’s largest metropolitan areas are Greater Seattle, Washington, with 3.8 million people; Greater Vancouver, British Columbia, with 2.5 million people; and Greater Portland, Oregon, with 2.4 million people.A key aspect of the Pacific Northwest is the US–Canada international border, which the United States and the United Kingdom established at a time when the region’s inhabitants were composed mostly of indigenous peoples. The border—in two sections, along the 49th parallel south of British Columbia and the Alaska Panhandle west of northern British Columbia—has had a powerful effect on the region. According to Canadian historian Ken Coates, the border has not merely influenced the Pacific Northwest—rather, “the region’s history and character have been determined by the boundary”.

FIRES IN CALIFORNIA IMPACTING CHURCHES, SCHOOLS, AND MEMBERS

We have all been concerned about the fires in California—and the possible impact on our churches, schools, and members. Both Camp Wawona in Yosemite, the summer camp operated by the Central California Conference, and Pine Springs Ranch near Idyllwild, the summer camp operated by the Southeastern California Conference, have been forced to close as a result of fires near them. Please continue to pray for those impacted by these fires!

COLE MARCUS’ USES ROLE IN CHRISTIAN FILM “I CAN ONLY IMAGINE” TO LIVE HIS FAITH

From a YouTube viral sensation at age 4, to acting and playing drums in the hit movie “I Can Only Imagine,” 19-year-old Cole Marcus is living God’s love every day. Raised in the South Bay Adventist church in Redondo Beach, California, Cole is as comfortable teaching Sabbath School and playing drums in the praise band as he is on the movie set. Ready to give up acting at age 18 because the roles he was offered didn’t fit his Christian values, he landed the part of Robby the drummer in the movie “I Can Only Imagine” – the Christian film grossed $70 million in its first 3 weeks and made a huge impact on audiences. Read Cole’s whole story in the July Recorder.

VACATION BIBLE XPERIENCE “SEA OF MIRACLES” SHOWS KIDS GOD’S LOVE

Did your church participate in a Vacation Bible School this year? The new curriculum, Vacation Bible Xperience “Sea of Miracles,” was created by the Southeastern California Conference in partnership with the NAD Children’s Ministries Department. It is available from AdventSource and is being used across the North American Division. This wonderful program shows children the power of Jesus’ love and what it means for us. Each day at Sea of Miracles kids explore Galilee during Jesus’ time and are nurtured in a growing relationship with Him. We are so proud of what the Children’s Ministries team in Southeastern has accomplished with this program.

YOUTH RUSH PROGRAM ENGAGES 290 STUDENTS IN SUMMER OF MINISTRY

Earlier this year we had a story about “Youth Rush,” the summer Literature Evangelism ministry engaging 290 students in 25 locations across our Union. These young people have been working in our communities, with the goal of bringing health, healing, and hope to people through life-changing resources and personal evangelism. With more than half of the summer behind them, they are inspired by what they have been seeing and doing—and by being used by God to be witnesses for his kingdom.
