The Carver “colored” school was built in the small town of Hominy, Oklahoma by the Work Progress Administration (WPA) in 1935. A fully modern school at the time, it was constructed of buff brick and limestone. Ironically, while a glaring symbol of the segregation of the day, the school also represented a major improvement in both facilties and quality of education, in addition to providing much needed work for the local black community during the great depression. The school also served as community center and meeting point for the black community.

The school had several class rooms, one which included a small stage and fuctioned as a small auditorium. A large attached gymnasium was also built that also contained a stage and could function as an auditorium.

When segregation was ended in the 1950s, the school was renamed and reclassified as the Hominy Junior High School. The Carver School moniker was painted over with the new title, though it is fading back through, like a ghost from the past. The school operated until 1979, when new facilities were constructed. It was converted to several other uses, including a head start before being abandoned.

Most of these photos were taken in 2011. The Gymnasium has since burned and is now just the shell.

Having already scored a dozen points in the fourth quarter on Friday, Iverson took things in his own hands.

“That was a great play by Allen,” Pistons coach Michael Curry said. “He hadn’t had much going for him in the first three quarters, but then he took over the game.”

Detroit have taken eight straight against the Thunder, and haven’t lost to the franchise at home since the former Seattle SuperSonics won 93-72 on Dec. 12, 2003. The Pistons didn’t have an easy time Friday, though, as they struggled to beat Oklahoma City (3-27).

STATS:
Allen Iverson: 22 PTS 3 REB 3 AST 2 STL
Tayshaun Prince: 16 PTS 11 REB 2 AST 1 STL 1 BLK
Rasheed Wallace: 12 PTS 8 REB 2 BLK
Rodney Stuckey: 12 PTS 2 REB 4 AST 2 STL 1 BLK
