CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The Maclean brothers go fly fishing with their dad (Tom Skerritt), who shows them who has the most skill.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Robert Redford’s lyrical direction sets the tone for this evocative adaptation of author Norman MacLean’s memoir of his idyllic Montana youth. The MacLean family is presided over by the strict but encouraging Rev. MacLean (Tom Skerritt) and his loving wife (Brenda Blethyn). Craig Sheffer stars as the young Norman, the older son in his family, who takes his school work and writing a bit too seriously for Paul (Brad Pitt), the impetuous younger son, to take much stock in. Paul would rather have a good time, drink and play cards than get involved with academic study. Where Norman wants to be a college literature professor, Paul would prefer to stay in Montana all his life and wrangle some kind of job writing for a local newspaper. But, ironically, Paul is the better fly fisherman and in this way attains a sense of perfection. The film also details the MacLean boys’ involvement with a colorful group of town’s people — including a young Indian woman Paul decides to date and the defiant Jessie (Emily Lloyd), whom Norman later marries.

CLIP DESCRIPTION:
John (Joaquin Phoenix) performs “Cocaine Blues” and gets the prisoners revved up in Folsom Prison.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
James Mangold’s Walk the Line tells the life story of country music legend Johnny Cash (Joaquin Phoenix), focusing primarily on the long courtship he had with June Carter (Reese Witherspoon). The film is structured as an extended flashback opening with Cash readying to take the stage at his historic Folsom Prison Concert. The film touches on his childhood, relating a horrific early incident from his life and establishing the troubled relationship he would have with his father (Robert Patrick). Cash joins the military and leaves home. During his time in the armed services he begins writing songs and romances a hometown girl (Ginnifer Goodwin). After the end of his duty he settles down and attempts to begin a music career, but his wife has trouble adjusting to his dreams. Cash auditions for Sam Phillips (Dallas Roberts), signs to Sun Records, and soon finds himself on tour with a roster of young soon-to-be legends that includes Elvis Presley (Tyler Hilton) and Jerry Lee Lewis (Waylon Malloy Payne). On this tour he meets June Carter, the daughter of the famous Carter family, and they take a liking to each other, although she refuses any serious advances from him. Cash gains world-wide fame thanks in part to the inspiration he gets from June, but eventually his marriage crumbles and he develops a serious drug addiction. The film is based on Cash’s autobiographies. Phoenix and Witherspoon performed all of their own singing in the movie, just as Sissy Spacek and Beverly D’Angelo did in Coal Miner’s Daughter a quarter-century before.

When Byron’s antics go over the top, his parents realize enough is enough and they decide the family needs a dose of Grandma Sands (Richardson) no nonsense approach in Birmingham, Alabama. So the Watsons load up the 1948 Plymouth Brown Bomber outfitted with a true tone Ultra-Glide turntable and head South with plenty of comedy en route. When they finally make it to Birmingham, they meet Grandma Sands and her friend, Mr. Robert (Grier), who show them around town and the Watsons discover that life is very different there than in Flint – and not necessarily for the better. Dark Wall Street is paying homage to the iconic “Black Wall Street” of Tulsa, Oklahoma. By the 1920s

Due to segregation, blacks developed and supported their own businesses, which flourished and created one of the most prosperous African American communities in the country. Hundreds of black-owned businesses lined Greenwood Avenue until June 1, 1921 when the deadliest race riot in US history lead to the destruction of these businesses, claiming the lives of as many as 300 African Americans and leaving over 9,000 homeless.

Remaining Black Tulsans rebuilt Greenwood without assistance from the state, and by 1942, Greenwood saw a resurgence of more than 240 businesses. Official Black Wall Street represents the rebirth of our most prosperous African American communities. You can learn more about the rise and fall of Tulsa’s Black Wall Street here.
