KANSAS CITY, Kan. —Police said they’re looking for the person responsible for a double homicide outside a Kansas City, Kansas, restaurant on Tuesday afternoon.

Two young men were killed about 2 p.m. at the intersection of 20th Street and Quindaro Boulevard, near Peppers Hot Dogs and Phillies.

“They are next to two vehicles,” said Amber Hickerson, of the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department. “(We’re) not sure if they were inside or outside the vehicles when the shooting occurred, but it appears to be from a drive-by.”

Police said they are still gathering leads and have a description of a vehicle spotted leaving the area, but investigators don’t want to make it public yet. Investigators also hope that nearby businesses captured video from the incident on their surveillance cameras.

Double homicide 19th, Quindaro Family members said the two victims, who were related, were 23 and 19 years old. Cousins and extended family members quickly rushed to the scene, fearing the worst. Some were overcome with emotion when those fears were confirmed.

“The initial officers that got on scene immediately had to call for multiple units to arrive because the magnitude of the crowd that started gathering,” Hickerson said.

Police said more than 10 shots were fired. At least 16 evidence markers were placed on the ground. The vehicles near the men were towed away, and one of them had its back window shot out.

“Only God knows the reasons things like this happen,” said Robert Carvin, who works at a church across the street.

He said he’s thankful that more people weren’t hurt.

“People don’t seem to care where it happened,” Carvin said. “I just say, ‘God help everybody.’”

“It gets to the point now, unfortunately, where people are going to do what they are going to do and they don’t care whether it’s day, night, in the morning, school’s running, buses (are) coming through,” said Hickerson. “Which is unfortunate and heinous, especially when it comes to a drive-by.”

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Crime Stoppers TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
