Within 30 years, the Greenwood District was one of the most prosperous cities in the entire USA.
Greenwood District of Tulsa, Oklahoma was known as “Black Wallstreet” by European American media because it was 35 city blocks of black-owned homes, hospitals, schools, churches, banks, and supermarkets. All the money stayed in the community.
On May 31, 1921, a white female elevator operator accused a black man in Tulsa of rape when he accidentally bumped into her. Tulsa newspapers would write stories that day with headlines like “Lynch All Niggers,” etc. Exactly 90 years ago today, June 1, 1921, the feral white populace of Tulsa, along with the county sheriff’s office and Oklahoma National Guard, murdered upward of 1500 children, women, and men in the city. Planes dropped bombs; the murderers looted everything; and the peaceful residents could only run to try and save their lives. This unfortunately was not and is not an isolated incident in the USA.
We will never forget our brothers and sisters of the Greenwood District.
More black US cities destroyed by white radical Christian terrorists.

Melvin Lee Greenwood is an American country music artist. Active since 1962, he has released more than twenty major-label albums and has charted more than 35 singles on the Billboard country music charts. Greenwood is best known for his single and signature song “God Bless the USA”, which was very popular back when it was originally released in 1984, and became popular again during the Gulf War in 1991 and after the September 11, 2001 attacks (becoming his highest charting pop hit, reaching No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100). He also has charted seven No. 1 hits in his career: “Somebody’s Gonna Love You”, “Going, Going, Gone”, “Dixie Road”, “I Don’t Mind the Thorns (If You’re the Rose)”, “Don’t Underestimate My Love For You”, “Hearts Aren’t Made to Break (They’re Made to Love)”, and “Mornin’ Ride”. His 1983 single “I.O.U.” was also a top five hit on the adult contemporary charts, and a No. 53 on the Hot 100.
Pinkard & Bowden was an American country music duo composed of singer-songwriters James “Sandy” Pinkard and Richard Bowden, who also play guitar and bass guitar. The duo’s music comprises a mix of musical parody and original comedy songs. Pinkard has also written hit singles for Mel Tillis, Anne Murray, and Vern Gosdin, among others. Between 1984 and 1992, Pinkard & Bowden recorded four albums for Warner Bros. Records.
This performance was recorded live at Church Street Station in Orlando, Florida.

The city took over Greenwood in the 1990’s, sponsoring several cleanups and paving a road there.
I have tried to research the history about this cemetery but have only discovered that it is the oldest African-American cemetery either in AL or in Birmingham. There isn’t much information available on-line. I have read good and bad about this cemetery. However when I visited in July of 2013, expecting the worst, the grass was cut and landscaping neat. It was clean and I didn’t see trash about. It appeared that the city is doing their best to maintain perpetual care. I’ve seen much worse.
What makes this cemetery special, is that there are three of the 16th Street Baptist Church murdered victims buried there. Without an office to ask for help, I was luck that after walking around for a while I was able to locate their graves.
It was thirty years before Addie’s sisters could bear to visit her grave, and when they saw its neglected state, they immediately arranged to have Addie Mae moved to another, better maintained cemetery. However, workers who opened the grave recoiled in shock: It was empty devoid of casket and corpse. No one can know with certainty who took the body or why.

Thanks for joining me as I visit the cemeteries, graves, memorials and final resting places of the famous people who have touched our lives. From movie stars to world leaders, from those whose died before their time, to those who lived to be centenarians–they may be gone, but they’re not forgotten.
Today, I’m taking a tour of the Greenwood Memorial Park and Mausoleums, in San Diego, California, where I’ll share with you such stars as Wizard of Oz Munchkins Johnny and Marie J. Maroldo, silent actor and uncredited Keystone Kop, Walter E. Bystrom, Entrepreneur Sol Price and others. Plus, I’ll visit the memorials to the American Legion, Canada Legion, and the San Diego Fire Department.
Since this cemetery is having a special Father’s Day event, I’d like to wish all fathers, buried and interred here, a happy Fathers Day!
Here is a list of the famous people, buried or interred in the cemetery grounds or one of the Mausoleums, that I was not able to find or visit on my cemetery tour today: Victor Buono, Cory David Rand, and Harold Bell Wright.
