Charleston church shooting: suspected killer Dylann Roof wore flags of white supremacy – TomoNews

CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA — Dylan Roof, the man charged with killing nine black people on Wednesday at South Carolina Church, has a social media presence which suggests a fascination with white supremacy.

Those who know him say he was a withdrawn, drifting young man, Reuters reports.
Earlier this year, Roof told a police officer his parents were forcing him to get a job after he was arrested for possession of illegal painkillers.

Roof appears to have struggled with his studies high school, repeating his first year at White Knoll High School. He left there and attended school in another district, before leaving in 2010. Education authorities have no record of the 21-year-old completing high school.

The photo from Roof’s Facebook shows him wearing a jacket with Aparthied-Era Rhodesian flags. These old flags, from South Africa and Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, represented these African nation when they were ruled by a white minority.

As well as this, other online images suggest he supported the Confederate States of America — the pro-slavery forces in the American civIl war.

Roof’s parents are divorced and he grew up moving between their homes in South Carolina. He has one elder sister. He is set for a bail hearing this Friday.

The Truth About Dylann Roof | Charleston Church Shooting

Views:130360|Rating:4.01|View Time:30:52Minutes|Likes:1630|Dislikes:402
Nine people are dead after a shooting that occurred on Wednesday at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. The congregation, established in 1816, is one of the oldest African American churches in the United States.

Gunman Dylann Roof told the worshipers, “I have to do it. You rape our women and you’re taking over our country and you have to go.”

One woman was specifically spared as Roof said, “I’m not going to shoot you because I want you to tell everyone what happened.”

Authorities believe that Roof acted alone – but as we’ll soon discuss, no mass murderer truly acts alone.

Roof has now been charged with nine counts of murder and has reportedly confessed to carrying out the shootings. In discussions with investigators, he said: “I wanted to start a race war, but almost didn’t go through with it because everyone was so nice.”

On Saturday, Dylann Roof’s personal website “The Last Rhodesian” was discovered. The website featured additional photographs and a 2,500-word manifesto which explained his motivations.

What is the truth about Dylann Roof?

CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA — A white man alleged to have massacred nine black people after spending an hour with them during a bible study at a historic South Carolina African-American church was arrested on Thursday, a day after the killings took place.

Following the killings a manhunt involving local and federal authorities ensued on Wednesday night, ending with the arrest of 21-year-old Dylann Roof 220 miles north of Charleston near Shelby, North Carolina.

He waived his right to extradition and was flown back to South Carolina following his capture. According to Reuters, Roof received a gun for his 21st birthday in April and his social media presence suggests a fascination with white supremacy.

Roof is set to appear at a bail hearing on Friday via video link from the Charleston-area detention center.

Wednesday’s mass shooting at the African Methodist Episcopal Church saw six women and three men shot dead, including four pastors, one of which was Democratic state Senator Clementa Pinckney, 41. The victims were aged between 26 and 87.

Charleston Judge: ‘Forgive Dylann Roof’

“The judge presiding over Friday’s appearance by the 21-year-old accused of a racially motivated mass shooting at a Charleston, South Carolina, church has previously been reprimanded for using a racial epithet in court.

Charleston County Magistrate James Gosnell was publicly reprimanded by a South Carolina disciplinary body in 2005 for uttering a derogatory word for an African-American to a defendant at a bond hearing. The same reprimand noted that Gosnell later bent the rules to get another judge out of jail who’d been caught driving under the influence with an open container in his car.

In 2003, according to records on the South Carolina Judicial Department website, Gosnell spoke to a black defendant appearing before him whom he knew personally.”
