CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA — Dylan Roof, the man charged with killing nine black people on Wednesday at South Carolina Church, has a social media presence which suggests a fascination with white supremacy.
Those who know him say he was a withdrawn, drifting young man, Reuters reports.
Earlier this year, Roof told a police officer his parents were forcing him to get a job after he was arrested for possession of illegal painkillers.
Roof appears to have struggled with his studies high school, repeating his first year at White Knoll High School. He left there and attended school in another district, before leaving in 2010. Education authorities have no record of the 21-year-old completing high school.
The photo from Roof’s Facebook shows him wearing a jacket with Aparthied-Era Rhodesian flags. These old flags, from South Africa and Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, represented these African nation when they were ruled by a white minority.
As well as this, other online images suggest he supported the Confederate States of America — the pro-slavery forces in the American civIl war.
Roof’s parents are divorced and he grew up moving between their homes in South Carolina. He has one elder sister. He is set for a bail hearing this Friday.
