A mother seeking sanctuary in a Salt Lake City church for the last six months has been denied her appeal to reopen her asylum case.
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The lone surviving Ku Klux Klansman imprisoned for killing four black girls in a church bombing in 1963 will remain behind bars after Alabama’s parole board heeded the victims’ families Wednesday and refused an early release. The board rejected parole for Thomas Edwin Blanton Jr., 78, who has served 15 years of a life term for being part of a group of Klansmen who planted a bomb outside Birmingham’s 16th Street Baptist Church during the civil rights movement. Lisa McNair, a sister of bombing victim Denise McNair, was relieved by the decision.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama’s parole board decided Wednesday against freeing a one-time Ku Klux Klansman convicted in a church bombing that killed four black girls more than 50 years ago. The decision to keep Thomas Edwin Blanton Jr., 78, imprisoned was met with applause at the hearing. Relatives of three of the slain girls spoke against Blanton’s release during the hearing. “Justice is served,” Lisa McNair, sister of bombing victim Denise McNair, said afterward. Blanton is the last surviving KKK member convicted of murder in the bombing of Birmingham’s 16th Street Baptist Church.

“Kendall Capers found no hope at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church after the death of his husband, Julion Evans, who died at age 42 from amyloidosis. Evans’ family are members of the New Hope congregation in Tampa, Florida, and Capers arranged to have the service there.
However, the funeral was abruptly canceled the night before it was scheduled to happen. The family was informed with a phone call from New Hope that said that it would be “blasphemous” to hold the service at the church, reported KCCI.
The cancellation came after members of New Hope noticed Evans’ obituary, which named Capers as the “surviving husband,” according to WFLA.”*

They had set the date and printed and mailed out all the invitations, but the day before wedding bells were to ring for Charles and Te’Andrea Wilson, they say they got some bad news from the pastor.
“The church congregation had decided no black could be married at that church, and that if he went on to marry her, then they would vote him out the church,” said Charles Wilson.
