The Mother’s entreaty to her Son for his bride and for another holy person, and about how the Mother’s entreaty is received by Christ, and about certainty regarding the truth or falsity of a person’s holiness in this life.

Mary spoke to her Son saying: “My Son, grant your new bride the gift that your most worthy body may take root in her heart, so that she herself may be changed into you and be filled with your delight!” Then she said: “This holy man, when he was living in time, was as steadfast in the holy faith as a mountain unbroken by adversity, undistracted by pleasure. He was as flexible toward your will as the moving air, wherever the force of your Spirit led him. He was as ardent in your love as fire, warming those grown cold and overtaking the wicked. Now his soul is with you in glory, but the vessel he used is buried and lies in a more humble place than is fitting. Therefore, my Son, raise his body up to a higher station, do it honor, for it honored you in its own small way, raise it up, for it raised you up on high as much as it could by means of its toil!”

The Son answered: “Blessed are you, who overlook nothing in the affairs of your friends. You see, Mother, it is no use for good food to be given to wolves. It is not right to bury in mud the sapphire that keeps all the members healthy and strengthens the weak. It is no use to light a candle for the blind. This man was indeed steadfast in faith and fervent in charity, just as he was ready to do my will with the greatest of continence. Therefore, he tastes to me like good food prepared through patience and tribulation, sweet and good in the goodness of his will and affections, even better in his manly struggles to improve, excellent and most sweet in his praiseworthy way of finishing his works. Therefore it is not right for such food to be lifted up before wolves, whose greed is never sated, whose lust for pleasure flees from the herbs of virtue and thirsts for rotten meat, whose shrewd speech is harmful to everyone.

He resembled the sapphire of a ring through the brightness of his life and reputation, proving himself to be a bridegroom of his church, a friend of his Lord, a preserver of the holy faith and a scorner of the world. Therefore, dear Mother, it is not right for such a lover of virtue and so pure a bridegroom to be touched by impure creatures, or for so humble a friend to be handled by lovers of the world. In the third place, by his fulfillment of my commandments and by the teaching of a good life, he was like a lamp on a lampstand. Through this teaching, he strengthened those who were standing, lest they fall. Through this teaching he raised up those who were falling down. Through it he also offered inspiration to those who would come after him to seek me.

3 killed in church camp bus crash in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS — A bus carrying teenagers returning to Indiana from a church camp in Michigan crashed Saturday afternoon just minutes from home, killing three people and sending 26 others to hospitals, officials said.

The bus came speeding off of Interstate 465 in northern Indianapolis, about a mile from the Colonial Hills Baptist Church that passengers attended, struck a retaining wall as it rounded a curve and overturned. The campers were returning from Camp CoBeAc in northern Michigan, about six hours away.

The church’s youth pastor had sent a tweet a couple of hours before the crash saying the group was expected to arrive at the church about 4:15 p.m., around the time the accident happened.

“They were not that far from home. That only adds to the tragedy,” said Indianapolis Public Safety Director Troy Riggs.

The dead included a man and his wife, Riggs said. Authorities did not provide information about the third victim.

Riggs and Mayor Greg Ballard visited the crash scene, where clothing, pillows and seat cushions from the bus were scattered along with at least two shattered windows, before they headed to the church. Riggs said there was no indication that the driver had a medical emergency and called the accident “a great tragedy.”

Ballard said investigators were taking measurements and examining the bus to determine the cause of the crash.

WTHR-TV reported the bus driver told witnesses his brakes failed. Indianapolis Fire Department Lt. Ato McTush said police and fire officials had not determined whether the church-owned bus, which was carrying 37 passengers plus the driver, had mechanical issues.

Duane Lloyd told WTHR that he heard a loud noise behind him as he was traveling near the intersection and saw the crash around 4:15 p.m.

“I heard a skid. I looked back. I see this bus in the air and people falling out of the bus,” Lloyd said. “I could have gone my whole life without seeing that.”

Karen Woodard, a member of Colonial Hills Baptist Church, cried as she stared at the wrecked bus.

“It’s so terrible. I can’t believe it,” she said.

Indianapolis Fire Department said crews had to free five people who were trapped inside after the crash. Several people stopped to help before first responders could arrive, including one man who helped pull the driver out of the bus, the department said.

“People were stopping their cars. People were literally trying to lift the bus,” Lloyd said. “You just try to do what you can do.”

Fire officials said the injured included children and adults.

Nine teenagers were taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital, including one in critical condition. Three of those were treated and released, hospital spokeswoman Sally Winter said. She said 10 others, including nine teenagers and a toddler, were taken to Riley Hospital for Children. Seven of those teenagers were treated and released, Winter said.

Many of the patients were suffering head, arm and leg injuries, fire officials said.

Roads near the scene were closed, and authorities urged people to use caution in the area. A hazardous materials crew was cleaning up diesel fuel that spilled in the crash.

Outside the church, a yellow school bus with the church school’s name was parked outside with piles of sleeping bags and suitcases nearby. Families hugged outside and talked quietly before going inside, where they met with Ballard and Riggs Saturday evening.

Ballard described the families as “remarkably positive” despite their sorrow.

“Some of the teenagers are hurting pretty bad and you can see that in their faces,” he said.

Church member Jeff Leffew, 44, of Fishers, who had three daughters on the bus that crashed and a fourth on a second bus, said he was waiting to pick them up in the church parking lot when the second bus arrived. He said he knew immediately that something was wrong because the kids on the bus were screaming.

He went to the crash scene and found his three daughters with only bumps and bruises.

He called the crash scene “surreal.”

“You’re just praying that it’s not as bad as it looks,” he said.

Student killed, multiple injured in Huntsville church bus crash in Atlanta

A bus from Mount Zion Baptist Church in Huntsville crashed in Atlanta, Georgia on Thursday afternoon.

Fulton County police report the bus was changing lanes on Camp Creek Parkway when it collided with a mid-sized Chrysler 200. The bus lost control, entered the uneven median, and rolled over.

The bus hit a Mercedes sedan traveling in the opposite direction.

Police confirm one person has died. Officials confirm that person was a church member. Family members identified her as 17-year-old Sarah Harmening.

37 people inside the bus, two people in the Mercedes and one person in the Chrysler were injured.

24 patients were transported to Wellstar Atlanta Medical locations in Atlanta, East Point and Marietta. Four patients remained hospitalized by Friday morning.

The investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.

In an emotional press conference, Harmening’s mother read a passage from her daughter’s journal that was written on the bus, just hours before she died.

It says she was sitting on the bus feeling sad that she was leaving home for a long time. Then she opened up her Bible, and read entries from 1st and 2nd Peter, which reminded her that she was spreading God’s love to the children of Botswana she was going to help.

“So mostly, I was just reminded of why I’m here, and God has called me here, and he has done this for a reason. So I know he is going to do incredible things. And we were up there talking and praying. And we know the incredible thing was impacting the world for Jesus Christ.,” said Karen Harmening, Mother.

Her sister Katelyn who was there also spoke to the media, and said she texted with Sarah in the hours leading up to the trip and Sarah said the mission trip, quote.

“Not about us, life is not about us, it’s about God who is eternal, and I want to dedicate the one moment I’m here completely and entirely to him,” said Katelyn Harmening, Sister.

The family was very emotional and Karen Harmening really only asked for one thing at the press conference, that people out there hearing about this tragedy if they don’t already know the love of Jesus Christ, that for the sake of her daughter, they give him a chance.

The church said the bus was carrying adults and high school students in grades 11 and 12. They were on a student mission trip to Botswana, Africa.

The Fulton County Ambulance Service says to call 678-473-1234 to find loved ones. Hospitals can call to report discharges.

Families of the most critical patients were flown to Atlanta. Meanwhile, church members gathered at Mount Zion back home.

One of those church members is Madison County Commissioner Phil Vandiver. His wife and son were on the bus, but they were OK.

“I got a hold of my son about two minutes after the accident. Thank God he carries a phone in his pocket. He was just, he was just rather shook. Couldn’t get much information, but him and his mama were fine,” Vandiver said. “We just want to keep those other family members that have more serious injuries, want to keep those in our prayers and keep those remembered.”

Alabama Speaker of the House Mac McCutcheon released the following statement:

The Huntsville community is coalescing around the Mount Zion Baptist Church family as transportation to Atlanta is being provided, blocks of hotels rooms are being booked, and local leaders are doing everything possible to aid and assist the relatives and friends of those affected. The Speaker’s Office stands ready to do everything in our power to assist this effort, and we will ensure that Gov. Kay Ivey remains updated on the situation.

On a very personal note, I would ask that everyone in Alabama join me in praying for our fellow citizens as the details and after effects of this tragic accident are being sorted out. Ask God to quickly heal those who are injured both physically and emotionally, to provide comfort to those who lost a loved one, and to bring peace to those who were traveling halfway across the globe to selflessly do His work in a foreign land. Let’s also remember the pastors, church leaders, and congregation of Mount Zion Baptist Church as they work to come to terms with this tragic accident.

Arizona Police Officer rams Armed Gunman with Police Car

TUCSON, Arizona — A Dramatic dash-cam video released Tuesday shows a police officer in a Tucson suburb using his cruiser to ram an armed suspect, sending him flying in the air before the car smashes into a wall. The man survived the Feb. 19 crash, and prosecutors cleared the officer of any wrongdoing. The video, now getting attention across the U.S., comes at a time of heightened tension over the use of force by police. The man who was hit, Mario Valencia, 36, faces several felony charges, including assault on a police officer.

Marana police Sgt. Chris Warren said Valencia robbed a convenience store in Tucson, broke into a church, invaded a home and stole a car. Valencia drove the stolen car to Marana, just north of Tucson, where he stole a rifle from a Wal-Mart.

Video from two different police cruisers shows Valencia walking down a busy business corridor with a rifle in his hands. At one point, Valencia points the rifle at himself and threatens to kill himself.

One of the dash cam videos shows an officer slowly driving behind Valencia as he shoots the rifle in the air. That officer tells others to stay back because the suspect is armed. But within seconds, a different officer drives his patrol car at high speed and rams into Valencia, sending him flying into the air. Officers with guns drawn quickly swarm the scene.

The officer has been identified as Michael Rapiejko. Warren said Rapiejko was put on a standard administrative leave because the incident was considered use of force. The Pima County Attorney’s Office cleared Rapiejko of any wrongdoing and he is back on the force, Warren said.
