ST. MARYS, Pa. — After more than 160 years of service in the area, the Benedictine Sisters of Elk County have announced they will close their monastery, the nation‚„s oldest Benedictine convent. The sisters said the decision was made Monday to move forward with plans to close St. Joseph Monastery, located on Church Street in St. Marys. The sisters said the decision came following ‚“three years of prayerful study. There are currently 17 sisters at the monastery, ranging from 58 to 91-years-old.Monastery administrator Sister Rita Brink said a number of factors, including aging members, declining membership and facility problems, made it impossible for them to keep the convent open.‚“The decision to work towards closure has been made, but there are still a lot of unanswered questions that need to be dealt with and processed,‚ Brink said. ‚“One of which is what will become of these buildings and this space.‚The property is owned by the St. Vincent Arch-abbey, where St. Vincent‚„s College in Latrobe, Westmoreland County, is located. Each of the remaining sisters is looking into other Benedictine communities where they can transfer their vows. The convent was founded when three Benedictine women from Germany settled in the St Marys area in 1852, and began offering opportunities for faith development and education in the then-newly settled community.Following a fire in November 1934 that destroyed the town‚„s hospital, the sisters allowed their academy to be used as a temporary hospital. The sisters played a lead role in helping to raise funds to rebuild the hospital. The sisters said they feel blessed by the generous support, appreciation and friendship of people in the Elk County area where they have shared their lives. There was no date set for when the monastery would be officially closed.

Bishop Paul S Morton Powerful Ending of this Anointed Sermon @ Temple of Deliverance COGIC

Bishop Paul S. Morton, Sr. was born in Windsor Ontario, Canada but was destined to move to the United States. God had a special calling on his life that extended far beyond the Canadian borders. In 1972, he moved to New Orleans, Louisiana. Not long after, he became the Senior Pastor of the Greater Saint Stephen Missionary Baptist Church. He served faithfully there for thirty-three years. Under his leadership, it became a “Full Gospel” Baptist Church, expanding to three areas of the city, maximizing at seven services per Sunday.

However, after the devastating storm, Katrina, God repositioned him. At God’s command, he passed the mantle to his wife, Debra B. Morton, who now serves as Senior Pastor of the mother church in New Orleans. Bishop Morton now serves as Senior Pastor of the “baby” church, G.S.S. Changing A Generation, in Atlanta, Georgia which was birthed out of the mother church. Bishop Paul S. Morton and Pastor Debra Morton now serve as each other’s Co-Pastor. Now “One Church in Two States”, their slogan is “Changing The Way We Do Church!”

Bishop Paul S. Morton, Sr. is also the founding Presiding Bishop of one of the fastest growing movements in America – The Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship International.

As an apostle, he has birthed many churches out of Greater Saint Stephen, New Orleans. Bishop Morton is also an international television preacher who, for over twenty-five years, reaches thousands of souls for the Lord on a weekly basis.

Morton is also a gifted author and an anointed singer, having received five Stellar Awards.

His life in Christ is evidenced by his love and compassion for his family, the brethren and those who are lost.

Many esteem him as a Pastor’s Pastor; a Leader’s Leader; His wife and children revere him as a loving husband and role model father.

Bishop Paul S. Morton, Sr. who strives to exemplify the heart of God, is truly God’s Man!

On the Proposed Closing of Holy Innocents Church, Manhattan

Christine Niles speaks with a parishioner on the possible closure of Holy Innocents Church in Manhattan, NY, the only parish in the entire NYC archdiocese that offers a daily Traditional Latin Mass. The archdiocese is pouring nearly $200 million into renovating St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the seat of the Cardinal-Archbishop–while considering shuttering and selling off two dozen churches, including Holy Innocents–a historic and debt-free church with a flourishing community–to the highest bidder to be knocked down and replaced with high-rises and other buildings.

Afterwards, Christine reads the text of Fr. Justin Wylie’s homily remarks about the closing, which expresses concerns that no provision is being made for a new home for this robust and unique community, as fully part of the Catholic Church as any other group and thus deserving of pastoral care.
