Pastor Bob Caldwell Calvary Chapel Boise teaches on John 5:16-29 with a message entitled “Marvel Not: The Resurrection is Coming.”

This sermon was preached on Sunday, April 4, 2010 by Pastor Bob Calvary Chapel Boise.

Biblical Text – John 5:16-29 (NKJV)

Honor the Father and the Son
16 For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, [a]and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath. 17 But Jesus answered them, “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.”
18 Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God. 19 Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. 20 For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel. 21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will. 22 For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son, 23 that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
Life and Judgment Are Through the Son
24 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. 25 Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself, 27 and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice 29 and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.

125th Candlelight Service at St. George’s Church, an historic service of lessons and carols

Sunday, December 8, 2013, 4pm

Our tradition of a Christmas festival has developed and grown throughout the long history of St. George’s Church — a New York City Episcopal congregation since 1749.

This year we celebrate our 125th Candlelight Service, which is modeled after the “Festival of Lessons and Carols” service — introduced in 1880 at Truro Cathedral in England by the Bishop, Edward White Benson, who became famous for this order of service and went on to become the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1883.

Here across the ocean: The Rev. Dr. William S. Rainsford brought our American Christmas Festival into St. George’s Christmas celebrations a few years after he became rector of this New York parish in 1883. An inclusive rector, who wanted to improve the quality of life in the community he eliminated the requisite “pew fee” (associated with prosperous churches in the city) in order to open the doors of the church to all. St. George’s does not charge for its Christmas concert-service, and the Candlelight Service continues to be free.

In 1908 Homer Norris, the organist, directed the special Christmas musical service, and Dr. Brickhead, the new parish rector, gave the address for what was billed as “The Children of Bethlehem” and “A Mystery” play in two parts. One hundred children of St. George’s congregation sang with the support of adult soloists and the Russian Symphony Orchestra in the city.

Under the composer and music director Calvin Hampton, Candlelight transformed into an celebrated community affair filled with innovation and creativity including one year a theatrical vignette where a great star à la “Sputnik” traversed the Christmas night sky via a wire-rig.

This year on December 8th, The Parish of Calvary-St. George’s in The City of New York will continue its Christmas tradition with the 125th Candlelight Service beginning with a prelude at 3:40pm. Our Candlelight carol service will then begin at 4pm. It is free, and all are invited; but come early as it is very popular in the community and no seats are ticketed.
