Birmingham, Alabama received an unexpected 2+ inches of snow on Tuesday January 28, 2014. The forecast was for a dusting with no travel problems. The snow fell when the temperature was only 20 degrees and the temperatures fell the remainder of the day. Due to the combination of the well below freezing temperatures, the hilly terrain in Birmingham and the elevated roadways, all roads became virtually impassable within an hour of the snow falling as thousands of people tried to get home. Many thousands were stranded on area interstates overnight as temperatues fell into the single digits. Schools, businesses, churches and privates homes became shelters for many.
